Would anyone know where I could find a vacant house? [Merlin pauses, drumming his fingers against the journal's pages.] This apartment is getting a little cramped--[and the next bit sounds rather forced, as though someone had expressly ordered him to say it:] It's not really up to snuff for a King of Camelot and his royal household.

[Merlin adds further complaint beneath his breath.] And I could do with not sleeping on a sofa. I told Arthur those things were bad for my back--and then he has the nerve to wonder why the washing's not been done.

[After this important request is dispatched, Merlin will be in the library. Having ducked out of dish duty, he sneaks his way out of the building and across the village with record time. The meeting on sorcery has truly rekindled a desire to learn previously subdued by Arthur's mortal peril and Uther's arrival.

Well into the evening (and with a lighted candlestick instead of electric lights), Merlin is tearing down many books on magic that he can find from the shelves. He scans most, but often becomes distracted by some of the lengthier descriptions of varieties in magic different from what he has known at home.

Anyone who comes by to also lurk in the library this evening may walk in upon a few of the spells he tries out. This may involve a few pages accidentally burning, or the sudden growth of a lilac bush on an empty chair.]

{ooc - out of character, we're looking at house #40 so if someone could steer him in that direction, that would be great!}

[ well now, that was unexpected. the unfortunately part that is. she now sounds rather amused. ]

Unfortunately? Why would having connections to royalty be unfortunate of all things?

I would not even begin to suggest that my connections are of the enviable sort. [He plays this one coyly. Nope, he was none too fond of admitting to be a manservant.]

You have an odd way of speaking. That's not said to be offensive, just an observation, is all.

[An abrupt (but warm) laugh.]

Don't worry. I'm not offended. [And with a brief thought to the verbal barrage he receives daily from Arthur.] I'm not that easy to offend, me.

Then that's one thing we have in common.

[ a beat. ]

You know, I never did get your name. I'm Emony Dax.

Merlin. [He answers, presumably in indication of himself.] Very nice to meet you, Emony. Even if it's the second time.

Second time counts more than the first due to the application of proper labels.

Is that how it works? [Another laugh. He seems quite personable at the acquaintance level, at least.]

Well, Emony. Have you been stuck here for long?

The one with the most meaning and definition is usually the one that stands out, isn't it?

[ she's rather well-versed in holding conversations with near-strangers, thanks to both her profession as an athlete and judge of her sport where idle chatter with people you've just met tends to fill in those gaps where otherwise you'd be counting the threads in your hand wrappings out of boredom and to thanks to the fact that she'd been a diplomat in her first life as dax. tobin's anti-social nature and awkward, almost non-existent social skills rarely came out to get her - something she was ever glad for. ]

I've been here for almost ten months. Long to some, but not so much to me.

Nearly six, for me. [And it certainly felt like a long time to him.]

[ emony perceives time in a different manner than most, given the long lives her people live - both the host bodies and the practically immortal lives the symbionts live. she's over two hundred years old. she doesn't see ten months as something that constitutes as a long time in regards to herself. ]

Do you miss it - your home?

Of course--don't you?

[Dirty liar. He doesn't really miss Camelot all that much. Here, magic is accepted. And Fina is here. Destiny may await at home, but so long as Arthur is also here? Merlin is quite comfortable with taking a break.]

Sometimes. Though, being here isn't so bad. It's a new experience and as a host, it's my job to indulge. I hope to go home one day-- [ nevermind how that was sort of a necessity, given the nature of the symbiont and needed a new host once emony's body aged to the point of death. ] --but being here is something I'm happy to look at in a positive light. The negatives not included, of course.
